The Department of Marketing, Operations and Digital Business

The Department has a clear focus on developing our students’ knowledge, understanding and practice in the key employability areas of Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, Retailing and Business Technology. These are all important sectors in industry with significant demand for early career professionals who have the ability to apply the skills they have gained in the Department through their applied learning of marketing, communications, operations, technology and digital marketing.

Students benefit from our extensive links with industry through projects, placements and guest speakers. Indeed, our award-winning, second year Agency Life Unit has provided many of our undergraduates with two terms of internship experience with leading marketing agencies in the region. A number of our units also involve live projects, which allow students to experience real business challenges and devise solutions to meet the needs of our business partners.

These interactions with industry provide the perfect platform for the opportunity to engage in a twelve month paid placement with one of our many placement providers. Our current students are working in varied roles for a rich mix of organisations from leading technology companies such as IBM, Apple and Microsoft to major consumer brand owners including L’Oreal, Barbour and Warner Bros.

Our teaching staff are active researchers in their disciplines, with specialist groups publishing in the key areas of Consumer Behaviour, Digital Marketing and Retailing. A number of our expert tutors are also undertaking consultancy projects with the business sector, primarily in the fields of strategic marketing and business operations, facilitating the development of current case study material and examples of practice for application in our lectures and tutorials.

The portfolio of postgraduate programmes taught from within the Department is also testament to the breadth of expertise of our staff, with specialisms in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Business Technology and Analytics and Public Relations.

The Department is also fully engaged with the professional bodies which provide an important focus in developing our undergraduates as early career professionals, including the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and the Association of Project Management (APM). We are also a major provider of education and qualifications to the Retail sector and are proud of our long-standing links in delivering the Foundation Degree in Retailing for Tesco, Asda George and Booths.
