The Department is characterised by its expertise in the functions which develop products and services from inception to the point of delivery and their consumption by the intended market. This includes the design, implementation and assessment of research methods; operations, logistics and supply chain management; and the application of information systems and communications technology to support the the marketing and retailing of products and services through traditional and digital channels.

At undergraduate level the Department delivers programmes in Marketing Management, Advertising and Brand Management, Retail Marketing, Public Relations and Business Information Technology. We have excellent links with industry and are delivering the very popular Foundation Degree in Retailing with a number of partners, including Tesco, Booths, The Southern Co-op and Halfords.

In general terms, all our programmes are known for their innovative content, their direct relevance to the needs of industry, their linking of theory with practice, their development of personal skills, and the excellent employment records of the students who graduate from them. The large number of staff in the Department, who have worked in a range of marketing and operations functions means that there is a wide range of specialist expertise to draw upon.

The same qualities underpin our suite of postgraduate programmes. These include three full time Marketing programmes namely: MSc Marketing Communications, MSc International Creative Advertising , MSc International Public Relations and the innovative, work based MSc Business (known as the Manchester Masters) . Our part time Masters in Digital Marketing Communications and Internet Retailing, offered in association with Econsultancy, attracts a large number of practising managers and provides a flexible and stimulating study environment in the rapidly developing Digital Business environment. Full time and part time MSc programmes are also offered in Management, Project Management, and Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

The Department has a strong association with the professional institutes which represent the various Marketing, Operations and Digital Business areas. Students on our Marketing programmes are credited with exemptions from the Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Diploma and we also receive accreditation for our taught units at undergraduate and postgraduate level from the Association for Project Management. Specialists within the Department maintain strong links with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
