‘Through successfully completing a placement, I feel that new pathways for my future career have opened up’

Rebecca Keeley (Marketing Management)
Robert Bosch UK Ltd

My work placement allowed me to gain invaluable real world work experience helping me to gain many professional skills which will set me apart from other graduates. I have been offered a graduate role at the firm after university, this is great as it will allow me to focus fully on my studies in my final year at university.

Mohsin Saleem (Business Economics)
Industrial Placement at PWC.

I applied to the [Government Economic Service sandwich student] scheme as I wanted to put into practice the skills and knowledge that I had gained at university, and to improve my employment prospects once I graduate. I have found the experience to be incredibly rewarding.

Sami Hamroush (Economics)
Government Economic Service

After completing my placement year I was given the opportunity to apply for the Aldi Graduate Scheme via direct application to the region’s managing director.  I secured a place on the Aldi Graduate Scheme and have now started my training to become an area manager.

Daniel Hallissey (Business Sandwich)

Benefits of undertaking a placement

There are a number of benefits in carrying out a placement:

  • When applying for permanent jobs you will stand out from the other candidates, as future employers will look favourably on the skills you gain both personally and professionally
  • The first-hand experience of working within an organisation will be crucial when applying for jobs once you graduate
  • You will earn a salary and gain experience at the same time
  • It will give you a better understanding and help you make informed decisions about your career
  • You will develop new networks and contacts which will be invaluable in your future career
  • Based on a study by High Fliers Research "You are three times more likely to get a top job" - The Telegraph 13th June 2013

Completing a placement shows a degree of independence as well as a sense of responsibility and purpose. You will become more confident and show that you are an adaptable candidate. You will increase your employability and show you have the capability to work in a business environment.

Whilst completing your placement you may have the opportunity, depending on the job role, to improve on various skills such as time management, organisational skills, project management, event management, interpersonal and communication skills.
