THE EXCELLENT outcome of the RAE earlier this year has led to Research Institutes being reconfigured into areas of strength.
MMU was one of only two universities to double its research income in the RAE, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Acting Head of Research Professor Val Edwards-Jones have moved to build on that success.
Professor Gerry Kelleher says the restructure wil embed research even more into the University, help Institutes focus on their successes and nurture new centres of excellence.
The new Research Institutes and their Directors are:
Institute for Performance Research (IPR) – Dr Paul Holmes
Institute of Humanities and Social Science Research (IHSSR)- Professor Dick Hartley
Dalton Research Institute (DRI) – Professor Dave Raper
Institute of Healthcare Science (IHCS) – Professor Bill Gilmore
Research Institute for Business and Management (RIBM) – Professor Gillian Wright
Education and Social Research Institute (ESRI) – Professor Harry Torrance
Research Institute for Health and Social Change (RIHSC) – Professor Carolyn Kagan
Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD) – Professor John Hyatt
Says Professor Kelleher: "We have maintained the independence of Research Institutes, particularly in respect of budgets, so that they can take decisions based on research need locally.
"Also, we have ring-fenced income for re-investment into research with a particular focus on PhDs, the development and support of staff, and infrastructure."
The new process for assessing research excellence is the Research Excellence Framework and the census date is December 31, 2012.
The exact mechanism for assessing research is currently under consultation, but it is expected to be similar to the process in 2008 with additional emphasis placed on societal and economic impact of research through case studies.
Added the DVC: "We have a lot of work to do over the next three years, but I know we can build on our previous success. The major focus for MMU’s Research Strategy is to focus on improving postgraduate student numbers, increasing research income and building research capacity.
"A number of training and development sessions will be available to staff to help them build their research profile further. They will also be kept informed of all details for the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework as it emerges."
