A POSTGRADUATE business student has won a national award for helping her course-mates break into their future profession.
Masters in Public Relations scholar Tara Cronin scooped the 2010 Student Representative Award from professional body, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
Tara, 22, signed up four out of five of her course peers to the CIPR which keeps upcoming public relations professionals in touch with industry trends, training and job openings.
"The CIPR can really give you an edge in the job market," says Tara, who hails from Cork in southern Ireland.
Tough job market
"PR is an industry where knowing people and being up-to-speed is particularly important. The more things you are involved in the better chance you will have of seeing a business or employment opportunity.
“It’s a tough job market out there, so getting to know people in the profession and how they work is critical. You can learn a lot from people who have been there and done it.”
Tara was cited for her enthusiasm and organisational skills in helping arrange events, exhibitions and promotions for the Institute, having been nominated as rep by her course-mates last September.
Her prize is a one-year paid placement with pioneering online publisher BioMed Central working with Matt McKay, one of the UK’s first Chartered Practitioners.
Dr Ruth Ashford, Acting Dean of MMU Business School, said: "It is extremely important that students use their time at university to become work-ready, particularly in industries like PR and marketing.
"Tara is an outstanding example of making oneself employable and we wish her well in what is sure to be a promising career."
Dave Sanders, Chair of the CIPR North West committee, said: "I can’t congratulate Tara enough on this tremendous achievement. She’s worked hard this year and really made the most of the opportunities presented to her.
"I know she’ll go on and do the same during her placement year and her subsequent career."
