A LOW carbon economy "will change the shape of industry, growth and jobs," according to the Government.
And ministers predict that once the economy picks up, green careers will bloom, driven by graduate entrepreneurs.
MMU is offering a new course for this new generation of skills which combines scientific knowledge of the environment with business acumen.
In an innovative move, MMU Business School has joined forces with its Science and Engineering Faculty to offer the Masters in Sustainable Business.
Course leader Liz Walley says: "Students are increasingly seeing that environmental technology is an area where they can make money. And it’s a win-win for employers who can take on graduates with skills in both domains.
"Anyone working in this area needs to be business-literate and eco-literate, so business and science students will take modules in each other’s faculties."
The Masters includes opportunities to complete a 6-12 week placement during the summer and a residential field trip to instruct field and lab techniques.
Business ideas can be cultivated through The Business School’s graduate business incubator, Innospace www.innospace.co.uk
This new programme combines the business acumen of MMU Business School – one of the largest Business Schools in the UK – with the expertise of the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at MMU.
The Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences has been awarded several ‘green apple’ awards for excellence in environmental education and practice.
Previous students of sustainability modules at MMUBS are impressed by the University’s teaching:
"I benefited from studying elements of sustainability for my MBA dissertation at MMU," says Neil Dumbleton, a biofuels manager for Shell International.
"A new MSc would be of great relevance to business as graduates will have the theoretical support to substantiate business strategy."
Alice Boswell, BREEAM consultant for Reegen, said: "Having studied sustainable business as part of my degree at the Business School and now working in the environmental industry, I have realised how relevant and well-rounded the material was.
"I really believe the concepts I learned and the breadth of material made available to us has given me a sound foundation to begin my career in the industry, so thank you very much!”
