Campaigner Shami Chakrabarti hosts MMU talk

Published: 7th January 2015

LEADING civil liberties campaigner Shami Chakrabarti will be giving a special talk at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Shami is set to draw on her wealth of experience for a fascinating evening hosted by Manchester Law School Law Society (MLSLS).

She will discuss ideas from her first book, On Liberty, which was published in October last year, touching on topics from indispensable rights to threats to democratic institutions to upholding democracy itself.

The director of civil rights organisation Liberty is chatting in the law school after accepting an invite from the student society.

The high-profile event is open to all students and staff for free. It features: talk, question-and-answer session and a book signing where copies of On Liberty will also be on sale.

‘Leading light’

Legal Practice Course student Rachel Conboy, from MLSLS, said: “Shami is the leading light of the liberty movement and it’s a real coup to be hosting her in the Law School. We’re extremely pleased she has decided to speak at MMU and we want to invite anyone who may be interested to come along.

“As a society, we enjoy bringing in thought-provoking speakers and Shami definitely fits the bill. We aim to give our members a broad range of experiences and the group is open to all students, undergraduate and postgraduate, to help prepare for a career in law."

A trained lawyer herself, Shami has since gone on to head up Liberty and regularly features in the media making impassioned defences for the protection of civil liberties. She is currently Chancellor of both the University of Essex and Oxford Brookes University, and also an honorary professor of law at the University of Manchester.

The event takes place on Thursday, January 15, 6pm to 8.30pm, in Sandra Burslem lecture theatre G.01. To book for free tickets, log on to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/on-liberty-shami-chakrabarti-tickets-15027445494.
