MMU is launching two new degrees in the business of sport in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
A degree course in sports management starts this September, while the BA (Hons) in sports marketing management will begin in September 2009.
"These courses are aimed at people who want careers in stadium management, sports events, leisure and recreation, or to work for companies supplying sports goods, for example," says Richard Warren, undergraduate programme co-ordinator for the Business School.
Modules in the sports management course include commercial aspects of sport, economics and finance for sport and leisure, operations management and decision-making.
The courses were developed with input from an industry advisory panel including Bernie Jones, chief executive of Trafford Community Leisure Trust, Julie Gaskell, director at Cranford Communications and there was also input from Manchester United Football Club.
Julie Gaskell said: "Sports management is like running any other business – it needs the right mix of commercial and leadership skills.
"During my involvement with the Commonwealth Games and my work in sports sponsorship, I have found the very best people are the ones who understand the dynamics of both business and sport."
With the Olympic Games coming to the UK in 2012 and Manchester's growing role as the North’s 'sporting capital', interest is expected to be high.
The sports management course could potentially cater to 200 undergraduates. Well over 1,000 clicks have already been made on the course's Facebook advert.
Research by the Northwest Regional Development Agency published in April showed there were 8,350 companies working in the sports industry in the region, employing more than 97,000 people with an annual turnover of £6.5 billion.
