The Business School Postgraduate Internship Programme is an optional unit which allows you to gain up to 12 weeks of experience in a business environment; putting your studies into practical application, at the same time as gaining practice credits, which are recorded on your degree qualification transcript.
Internships can be part-time or full-time. Part-time internships can commence at any time from November to August but must fit around your scheduled classes. Full time internships can be undertaken during the university vacations and in the period from May to August when you will be working on your dissertation.
'I had never completed a PR placement before applying through the postgraduate internship scheme, but gaining a placement was one of my goals for the year as I knew how important it was for not only my developing and learning, but to advance my career prospects. I was nervous to apply as I knew each placement required an interview, however the team at MMU were really helpful and supportive, making sure I was ready and prepared for each one.
I succeeded in gaining two placements through the postgraduate internship programme. One with a PR agency and another working in PR in-house. On each placement, I learnt entirely new skills and it was good to experience both types of PR.
I also found completing a placement alongside my studies to be helpful, as I could use skills I was learning in practice in my studies.'

‘The best decision I think I made during my postgraduate studies was to accept an internship with Walker Smith Global as an Accounts Assistant.
I not only acquired work experience but it also led to my first job with the same company. The MMU Postgraduate Internship Programme department took time to help me arrange my CV in a professional manner and supported me all the way.
I will always be a proud Manchester Metropolitan University alumni and ambassador.’

'Taking part in the Postgraduate Internship Programme proved to be the best decision I made while studying for my master's degree at MMU. Not only did I gain valuable work experience which helped with my course, I also secured a full-time job while I was on placement. The team has been incredibly supportive and efficient in helping me apply for internships, and the CV advice service has been brilliant in getting my CV up to scratch. Securing a permanent role as a direct result of the Postgraduate Internship Programme is testament to the benefits of taking part in the scheme.'

'The Postgraduate Internship Programme was a great opportunity for myself and anybody able to work with them to gain valuable work experience. They made it incredibly easy to find opportunities in the area and kept you update to date on all progress. As an international student it proved to be tough to know where to look on your own but the Postgraduate Internship Programme made it so easy and I was able to secure a position very quickly.'

'My internship with the Co-operative Bank was a great opportunity as it provided me with the privilege of joining the Resourcing Team, in order to work on the Graduate Recruitment Programme. This afforded me the chance to put the various theories I learnt in my Human Resource Management course into practice and enabled me to improve my resourcing skills. At the end of my internship, my stay with the bank was extended which helped me to witness the recruitment programme progress to the next stage. That stage included inviting applicants to an assessment centre with a view to selecting the right candidates to fill vacancies in the Finance, Marketing, Banking and Audit departments. What I appreciated most about working with the team was their ability to deliver a fair recruitment system thus providing equal career opportunities for all successful applicants. The placement has been a stepping stone to my career in Human Resource Management and I could not have asked for a better experience!'

'After gaining some experience in the business industry I decided I wanted to expand my knowledge in this field so I came to study an MSc in International Business Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. I was strongly recommended from the first day to register for the Postgraduate Internship Programme in order to help me to enter into the UK employment market. Their support was fundamental. They gave me great help preparing and converting my CV to the UK requirements, as well as targeting my Covering Letters.
After just two months, I accepted an unpaid internship at Picture Lock Productions. By March I was recruited for a paid role at IOS International Agency Ltd, also through the Postgraduate Internship Programme. Today, I am still working at IOS International Agency Ltd with an extended paid contract, as well as providing external consultancy to Picture Lock Productions. I would strongly recommend the Postgraduate Internship Programme as they supported me every time I needed it.'

'For over seven months I followed an internship programme at a PR agency in Manchester, having applied for it through Postgraduate Internship Programme. As I attended this on a long-term basis, I developed solid work experience and learnt the pleasure of being a valued member of a PR team. Tasks that I carried out included liaising with key people from the media over the phone, which enabled me to understand the manner needed to represent the agency and client positively. Multiple press releases I wrote gained coverage for clients, in which I gained a great deal of satisfaction in being partly responsible for the team's success. In addition to this, I used software such as Gorkana that PR practitioners heavily make use of. Generally, this internship has enabled me to develop the competencies required for this industry; many of which would be difficult for the lecture hall to provide'

Their tips helped me to get an internship in a marketing agency, which provided me with real-world professional experience. This experience was crucial to get the full time position I now have as a marketing assistant. Thank you!'

'Nothing is better than an internship that results in further work. Seeing what you can do for the company and that they value your work while you are learning is priceless. I would recommend everybody to gain experience through an internship that will help them discover their own potential and the different area of practice that they want to follow'

'We found the PG internship valuable for us as it allowed us the flexibility to experiment with interns to mould them to our business needs. By putting them through our own intense training programme we could see who adapted quickly. So far it has been a 100% record, we took on two interns who became full time employees of rormix after 3 months.'
